The present study is aimed at studying the heat generated in steel specimens cyclically tested at stresses lower than their macroscopic elastic limit, in the objective of detecting the onset of microplasticity. First, the data processing procedure is presented to calculate heat sources and thermal energy levels from temperature maps. Then, a sensitivity study is performed to establish the smallest energy value that can be detected above noise. Finally, results are presented for a cold rolled low carbon steel material. It is shown that two main mechanisms of dissipation are present, the first one corresponding to viscoelastic effects and the second one associated to microplasticity.
